I Made A Winter Moleskin Clare Coat!

Hey everyone - I am so excited to show you my new Clare Coat - View A (by Closet Case Files) today! I was very flattered to be approached by Hawes and Freer to make something from their one of their beautiful fabrics - to celebrate the launch of their new website. Here's what I came up with...

I chose some soft camel lightweight moleskin and some stunning raspberry lining to go with it.. they were also kind enough to send me the fusible interfacing and a 32" separating coat zipper! (which they don't currently have on their website - but if you ask they might be able to find what you need!)  Head on over to have a look if you fancy coat making too! :)

They quickly arrived beautifully packed with a hand written note. Thank you!!!

To be honest - coat making has been the most complex project that I have attempted so far, and the first time that I have ever made anything that has been lined! So it was a little daunting - but since making my Ginger Jeans (in the pictures below also) I knew that Closet Case Patterns had some pretty great instructions and amazing sew-along's if I got stuck!

I spent a couple of weekday evenings cutting and fusing to prep. There are A LOT of pieces to this pattern! Fabric, fusible interfacing, thicker interfacing (for the collar) AND lining to cut. But once you make the first move to start sewing - it comes together really quickly and all the pieces start disappearing into the coat :) It took just one weekend to sew from start to finish.

I initially cut a size 16 according to waist and hip measurements and graded down to a 14 for the bust. But the size 16 ended up being far too roomy for my liking, so I brought in the seams accordingly and I was much happier with the fit. Next time I'd definitely opt for a 14 or even a 12/14 perhaps. I also cut full sleeves to start with and then cut them down to a 3/4 sleeve later on - and I'm really happy with how they turned out!

I LOVE this coat! See below for photo fest.

As per the illustration on the pattern cover, I decided the coat would not be complete without a leather tassel... so i bought some leather, hand dyed it with tea to colour match the coat - and then made it up! So happy with how it turned out.

The moleskin and lining were a dream to sew with, no problems at all.. and I didn't have to use a walking foot or heavy duty needle like I thought I might need. Pretty darn happy with this coat making adventure - I would do it again!

Happy winter sewing everyone... would love to see your coat versions if you have been making them too.. leave me a link to visit! :)
