Hey all! Today I am sharing the surf adventure we took on the West Coast after Christmas. We hired a bach in Westport with some buddies, and the dog, and had stunningly beautiful few days exploring the coast.
First stop, we headed to Tauranga Bay - a beach break where all the locals surf and tourists learn to surf. It felt pretty safe and had some pretty decent waves, although there is a bit of a rip off the river mouth that you need to look out for. A pretty spectacular day though!
Next we headed down to Punakaiki to check out the pancake rocks and check out the surf just North and thought we would drive back up to Westport and surf various places on the way. The tide was high when we arrived though - so we did some sight seeing and then headed to the beach break south of the rocks..
There was a huge current that dragged you North when we were there... don't know if its always like this, but we caught a couple of waves and then got out as we kept drifting so far!
.. and headed up the river to check out a lunch spot and have a swim! (and paddle...!)
Next stop - Punakaiki blowhole surf break. Best surf ever. We all stayed in as long as we could! We were told that this place has the best surf on the coast when the swell is small.. and it was amazing! Didn't come home until we were all utterly exhausted and crispy from the sun.
The West Coast has a reputation for being really tough & wild, so we didn't really know what to expect, but we got really lucky with the weather and the swell, and it was perfect!
I hadn't spent much time in Westport before (apart from the time our car broke down and we were stranded there at a mechanics in the rain) so I didn't have high expectations, but I was really surprised about how nice it was there - plus is was a bonus they had a really cute coffee shop (takeaway only) and the boys found a really good local brewery which they were all over..
The dog had a great time too with unlimited beach runs and tennis balls.. !
Hope you have enjoyed this photo fest! ;)
Would highly recommend a surf trip on the West Coast.. and if you are new to it, then this cool backpackers takes people out on trips so you wont have to worry! Also highly recommend this book - New Zealand Surfing Guide - if you want go surf adventuring in NZ!
